Baby Led Weaning with Munchkin!

Baby Led Weaning with Munchkin!

Since Mini M turned 6 months old two months ago, we’ve been been having so much fun doing baby led weaning and introducing him to solid food with the help of some lovely products sent to us from Munchkin!  Founded in 1991, Munchkin offer really clever and innovative products that help make parenting easier and enjoyable.

When Miss M was the same age, we decided to do Baby Led Weaning with her and had so much success.  As new parents, we didn’t know if baby led weaning was better than spoon feeding so decided to try it and see.

The basic premise is that instead of feeding your baby purees and mashed up food by a spoon, instead you give them finger food that is cut into pieces they can pick up, hold themselves and feed themselves.

I’ll post more about the kinds of foods that have worked for my two children but so far with Mini, he’s having a lovely mix of things like banana, carrot, sweet potato, buttered toast and more!

We started him on banana which was also one of Miss M’s first foods.  It’s so easy for them to grab and helps so much in practicing and perfecting their pincer grip and grabbing.  We leave a bit of the peel on to give him something dry to hold on to – otherwise it would be a bit hard in the early days.

I’ll confess something to you though, I HATE banana.  I have a full-on phobia of it – the smell, the texture, everything.  However, I’m doing everything I can not to pass my food phobias on to my kids so they’re having banana!

Here is Mini wearing his very stylish and immensely practical Munchkin To Go Bib and ‘enjoying’ his banana!  You’ll be pleased to know he does like it now – as with any new foods, persistence is key and trust me, we persevered a LOT.

The Munchkin To Go bib has an helpful crumb-catching pocket on the front and after use if you’re out and about, it can then be rolled up to store the mess until you’re home.  It’s brilliant for keeping my nappy bag clean and tidy.  You can even store a spoon or other utensils inside!

We’ve also been using the Munchkin Love-a-Bowls which are so cute and colourful.  In the 10 piece set, you get 4 bowls, 4 matching lids and 2 spoons.  These are great for mealtimes and transporting food and snacks when we’re out and about to keep them fresh.

They don’t leak either, bonus, and are safe for the dishwasher, microwave and freezer.

We also use them to transport snacks for Miss M like raisins and sultanas, grapes and other chopped up fruit.

Although we’re baby led weaning, we’re also watchful of not wasting food so if Mini hasn’t finished his meal himself, we sometimes use the spoon to mash up the rest and feed it to him.  Not strictly BLW maybe, but we don’t believe in waste.

I’ll be posting more about the baby led weaning first foods we’ve been trying soon.

Have you tried baby led weaning or do you prefer the traditional spoon feeding method?  I’d love to hear your ideas!

My husband has a banana phobia too, but as myself and my son live them he has managed to learn to live with bananas in the house
