Feature Flip #07 DannyUK
Welcome back to Feature Flip! Feature Flip is dedicated to showcasing some great features run by my fellow bloggers. You can read more about Feature Flip here.
This week I’m turning the tables on Dan at DannyUK!
I asked Dan to write a little blurb about himself:
Dan wrote this. And this. And this as well as the next bit: Read my blog at DannyUK.com and find out for yourself what it’s about. I guarantee you’ll love it. (The guarantee is not a guarantee, nor should it be taken as one. Dan had his fingers crossed when he said it)
Dan runs a regular series called Bearded Backchat where he interviews fellow bloggers and I’m taking part shortly so I thought it was a great opportunity to
interrogate interview Dan back with his own questions – over to Dan!
Who are you? The name on my birth certificate is Daniel. Everyone calls me Dan, but online it’s DannyUK. (Though I’ve been called far worse things in my time!)
What is your “day job”? As I write this, I am officially a full-time blogger! That’s only because I am in between jobs at the moment, and by the time this goes live I should be working as a mortgage consultant.
What is your blog called and where can we find it? It’s DannyUK and it’s at http://dannyuk.com
What’s your blog about? Anything and everything. The kindest description would call it eclectic, though those with a lack of vocabulary would say that it contained “all sorts of crap”. In truth I fall somewhere between lifestyle and parenting blogging, I think.
Why did you start blogging? As a way of keeping an online diary where I could detail things that happened in my life. This was back in 2004, long before the blogging scene kicked off to become the beast that it is today.
Why do you still blog? I enjoy it. I like the fact that I can write pretty much what I want when I want, and I don’t HAVE to write if I don’t want to.
How has blogging changed since you started? It’s changed massively. What started out as basically an online diary has evolved into a world where everyone wants to shout into the never-ending blackness of the internet. There’s so much more of a platform for people to blog these days. It’s better in terms of more exposure for bloggers and more chance of your voice being heard, but there are far too many people doing it for the wrong reasons (in my opinion!)
Would you count your blog as a job, or something fun to do in your spare time? If it ever feels like a job, then I’m doing something wrong. I’d love it if the blog brought in enough money for me to pay my bills without increasing the work I put into it already, but the truth is that the blog is definitely a hobby. I don’t want to have to work really hard at it, and I don’t want to get to a stage where I am writing for the sake of writing, or feeling like I have to publish something that I’m not overly keen on.
Where do you get the inspiration to write a blog post? It could be anything, though it normally stems from something I read or hear on the radio. I go through periods of not having anything to say (or rather anything that I want to say). When that happens I tend to try and go back to basics and blog about what’s happening in my life, without worrying about how the post will pan out or whether it’s a decent enough read.
If you could recommend three other blogs to read, what three would you recommend and why? There are so many blogs that I like reading, and also so many blogs that I like reading but are full of articles that have no interest for me, so I am going to sit slightly (only slightly though) on the fence here.
- https://twofishesdiary.com/ – My friend Loz blogs here, though not as frequently as most. She writes well, is funny, and because I know her in real life, everything seems much more relatable.
- http://30somethingmel.co.uk – My ex-wife and mother of my children. She’s started to ease up on blogging now, but if it’s beauty blogging that you’re after, she’s pretty popular in those circles.
- http://sussexwithlove.co.uk – Kelly is someone that I only really discovered when she took part in this Bearded Backchat series. I fell in love with her writing style as she is just so open and honest. She doesn’t write enough though (booooo!!)
What is the single best thing that has come about as a result of your blog? There is no one single thing. The blog has brought some nice opportunities, including days out, meet and greets with famous people and a few chances for free food and drink, but nothing that especially stands out from the rest.
What would be your perfect blog post? My perfect blog post would be an announcement that Costa Coffee had named me their official blogger, meaning I could visit loads of new Costa stores, take trips around their factories, get discounted coffee and write about their brand. I’m pretty much always in a Costa store every day, and I love the brand so it would all tie in nicely.
What can you recommend to other bloggers to increase the traffic to their sites? There is no quick way to do it, that’s the first thing. Write well, write often, comment on other blogs and be active on social media and it’ll all start coming together. Make sure you have the Yoast plugin too, as that will guide you on SEO.
Which brands do you enjoy working with? Everyone has their favourites. I got to work with Costa Fresco recently, which was as close as I’ve got to Costa Coffee themselves. Aside from that I worked with Durex a couple of years back which was great fun, and more recently I found myself getting absurdly excited about Vax and their products. I’ll always hold a candle for Balloon Baboon which is a local business run by Julie, who I have met a few times. She is lovely and I think what she does is fantastic.
Everyone has that one company that they have always wanted to work with, but have never quite been able to. Who is yours? It’d have to be Costa Coffee. Years ago they took on an official Costa writer and sold a book of short stories in their shops. As I said above, I’d love to be the official Costa blogger. I’ve been to (literally) hundreds of their stores (which I blogged about here and am always in my local store. Come on, Whitbread, reach out to me!
What is your own personal favourite post on your site? I love this one: The previously unwritten rules of online dating.
Whose blog would you love to be featured on or write a guest post for? I could name names here, but let’s be honest, I am happy to appear on anyone’s blog if I have something decent to say. If I put my Pro Blogger hat on, then it would be someone with a high DA. How mercenary of me!
Lastly, if you were to interview another blogger, what question would you ask that I haven’t asked here?… If you could play one position on a football team and be the best in that position, which would you choose and why?
… And what is your answer to that question? Attacking midfielder. Good enough to score goals every now and then, but happy enough to give everyone around me the chance to score goals of their own.
