Getting back outside with the kids + SmarTrike Giveaway!

Gettting back outside with the kids + SmarTrike Giveaway

Finally we’re getting warmer weather in Australia and Spring is only around the corner – hurray! Since my treatment has ended, I’ve been enjoying getting a bit more active again and getting back outside with the kids and last week we had a little trip down to our local park.

I’ve felt so guilt since my cancer diagnosis and treatment that I haven’t been able to spend as much time playing with the kids as I’ve wanted to. Sometimes, I’ve just been too tried or too ill. Now I’m recovering and getting more energy, I’m making the most of it.

First of all we surprised Mini by showing him his new SmarTrike! His sister had one when she was his age and loved it – every day we took her to the shops, the park or a walk around town with it so she was happy for her little brother to have a SmarTrike of his very own.

The SmarTrike arrived in a big box and I had it constructed in about 10 minutes. It’s very easy to assemble with simple instructions – which I need!

We have the 5 in 1 SmarTrike which is designed for kids aged 10 – 36 months which is perfect for my son who is 14 months old. It will last for ages because as he grows up and gets bigger and more able, we’ll be able to remove the safety bar and he can learn to peddle as we push him along.

Eventually, we’ll be able to remove the parent handle altogether and he’ll be free to peddle on his own – I can’t imagine that right now as he still seems so small but I can’t wait to see how he grows up with his new SmarTrike!

I never expected to get a cancer diagnosis so young and when I got my diagnosis, the first thing I thought was how I might not be around for my children. The guilt has been overwhelming at times and I know that ‘parent guilt’ is something that a lot of parents struggle with.

I’m feeling so much better now my treatment is all complete and I have the all-clear but I don’t imagine it will be the last parenting challenge I face.

My kids are growing up so fast and I don’t want to miss a second of it. SmarTrike recently commission a survey on the top reasons why Aussie parents feel ‘guilty’ which found that 80% of mums and dads regularly doubt their own parenting decisions. So I know I’m not alone. Reasons for feeling the guilt included the rate their kids developed, the products parents bought their kids, how much they played or exercised with their kids and more.

Even now, I do not have the energy some days to be able to get really active with the kids but the SmartTrike means we can get out and about, enjoy the fresh air and have some exercise. It’s so lightweight and easy to steer which means I can easily manage it now and as I’m getting fitter, we can do even more. In fact, as Mini grows up and learns to peddles himself, I plan to be at my fittest and running around after him!

I know my ‘parent guilt’ isn’t going to go away overnight but I have plan for the future to be out and about more with my kids.

I’ve teamed up with SmarTrike to offer 1 lucky reader the chance to win a SmarTrike for your child!

With all the weeds that have invaded my garden over Winter, I ended up buying some kids gardening tools and gloves for Ben’s 2nd birthday a few weeks ago and he’s been by my side ever since…..although he often thinks it’s time for a “horsey ride” on my back when I’m down on my hands and knees in the dirt hahahaha.

Turning off all electronic devices for at least an hour or two everyday and spending that time doing fun things outdoors whether it be in our backyard or down the park, just fun family time without interruptions from electronic devices.

Nothing beats getting out the family on a warm spring day, enjoying nature and walking the dog!

My tip is to get them to go on a treasure hunt. I often give the kids a bucket and they pick up nuts, sticks etc and it keeps them entertained while still moving!

My LO is only happy outside. The joy of them discovering things we take for granted – wind in their hair, sea spray on their cheeks, sand/grass between their toes, watching birds fly & dogs run. It reminds me to be mindful of how lucky we are to be in a beautiful country & the chance to parent safely. News & social media constantly show us the wars and disruption world wide, getting outside to sit/run/play & be greatful is good for body & soul! Top tip for getting outside? Just do it – you don’t know what you might be missing.

We love to go for a walk along the lake with our 2 year old and our dog! Having a SmarTrike would just mean having everything all in one and it will grow with our kids! Any excuse to get outside into the fresh air right?

Making the most of the weather. If it’s hot, go for a swim. Warm, spring days are perfect for long walks and playing at the park. There are some nice days during winter for walking, or what child doesn’t like splashing in some puddles and hunting for rainbows after the rain. There is plenty to get out and about for – each day is a new opportunity to try something different.

Wanting us all to be happy and healthy, getting a sun kissed glow being out and about in the fresh air. Either a family walk around the lake, or a trek somewhere new and exciting, even kicking a ball or footy in the local park, ‘getting our game on’. So yeah I guess the tip is wanting to be in good shape, setting the foundation for good habits by providing a good example and not being on the couch or in front of a screen all the time.

Get outside and play with them, chase them around, use your imaginations and make the most of the great outdoors rather than plonking them in front of an ipad.

Having fun , playing in the sun. Try to win at capture the flag or simply play old tag. Hide and seek where if you’re counting you can’t peek. Children are curious and smart , exploring and expressing themselves in being creative . Providing a variety of kinds of play to keep it interesting and different each time.

We take as much advantage of the good weather as we can. We will walk (and stroll) to the park, or run around with the football in our big backyard. We also always have the music on, which results in lots of fun dancing which is a great way to get our bodies moving without a second thought

Plenty of outdoors time, we go for bike rides or the kids go on their scooters and i walk, it makes me walk faster when they go so far ahead!!

We are lucky to live near a reserve so we walk there almost every day, weather permitting. My baby carrier definitely comes in handy as I take the busy toddler out (now with his new bike) and now it’s a habit we’ve built so it definitely feels easier to commit to stepping outside!

  25. Isla Tyack
    28th August 2016 / 8:56 pm

We’re always outside! sometimes i wonder if my baby is the poster child for Bush Baby! My top tip is, ‘start going out with Baby as much as possible while still tiny!’ My daughter may just be starting to crawl but outside time is very much looked forward to & a non negotiable part of our day!

  26. Kylie T
    29th August 2016 / 6:53 pm

Get up early before them them so you’re all ready to go and explore the world together (if I don’t get up early, we’ll be lucky to leave the house haha)!

Simple walks to the park or beach are so beneficial to adults and kids – It’s a great bonding time, fantastic for the health and it encourages children to maintain healthy lifestyle choices in the future.

Swimming and playing on the tramp is fun (kids even got me doing a front flip) and great exercise. We also do any events such as Candy Jam and Fun Runs together so the kids see how many people have fun while keeping active :)

we made the cubby house and play area big enough for both the kids and us. We can swing, climb, play, pretend, hide, picnic and discover along with our kids, and they love it, their friends love it and other mums and dads love it and get involved when they visit.

  37. Shannon Wotton

Picnics in the park are always fun. We pack a picnic blanket, lunch, the dog, scooters and some balls and off we go to an old favourite park or on an adventure to a place we’ve never been before!

  41. Natalie
    9th September 2016 / 10:43 am

As a new mum, I find that it is best to get moving straight after my baby’s first feed in the morning. If I wait too long, I feel less inclined to get out and about for the day.

  42. Jessica Ashbrooke

We got for daily walks they are so much fun

  43. Melinda Bolitho
    9th September 2016 / 6:04 pm

I find the best way to get active with kids is in ordinary daily activities. Sometimes even the best planned “outings” can go seriously wrong or be just plain stressful! We have a couple of small parks nearby that we favour as well as things like jumping on the trampoline at home, exercises in the morning before breakfast and even gardening! Spring is the perfect time to get outside and it really cures the naughty boredom!

  44. Sharon Johnson
    9th September 2016 / 9:56 pm

When the sun is shining go explore. New parks are a must. You’ll thank yourself for it.

  45. Lauren Thomas
    9th September 2016 / 10:08 pm

Take them out for bike rides, or ask them what they want to do, and then find a way to make that active. For example, if they love playing video games, take them to laser tag.

  46. Kelly Ryan
    10th September 2016 / 10:04 am

We go park crawling, it’s a fun way to keep active and the older kids can hunt for Pokemon along the way!

Being outside makes activity more appealing. Backyards, parks and playgrounds are wonderful places that encourage activity and imagination.

We have a community hub in our area which we visit everyday! There is a playground and a great indoor area so while we can both play, we can also enjoy everyone else’s company.

I need one of these for my sanity! Getting out everyday with a 3 year old maniac on a scooter and a nearly 1 year old who thinks she is also too old to sit in a pram is killing me! This would make our daily park walk much easier for everyone, the 1year old can follow in her older sisters shoes and become a trike maniac :)

  54. Cate
    10th September 2016 / 7:43 pm

I give my 5 year old ‘permission’ to make sure we all go outside on an ‘adventure’ everyday (with exercise being a bonus!). He loves ensuring that we do; sometimes with umbrella and gumboots! He gets to choose the adventure (within reason). We often go for a walk to see the kangaroos up on the hill, follow a ‘treasure map’ in the backyard, practise riding his bike to the park or pretend we are training for a marathon- He’s got a great imagination! Now that we have a 6 month old we have had to curb some of our bigger excursions. The SmarTrikewould help us manage some of our longer adventures more easily!

  56. Elisabeth Martins

Limiting their time on the computer or other electronics,
this gives them more time to play outdoors.
They are not allowed to use their electronics,
    until they’ve had some sun.

Every opportunity we get, we go for drives into the country and find beautiful walking tracks and national parks to explore. We make a day of it and the kids really enjoy it. I also use the internet to google different playgrounds in our area so the kids don’t get bored of going to the same ones all of the time.

  58. Belinda B
    11th September 2016 / 2:09 pm

I take my kids to the beach a lot where we look for sea glass for crafts and go for really long walks/runs/handstands in the sand :)

We absolutely adore the great outdoors! Whethef its at the beach, down by the river, bushwalking or at the park we love exploring wherever we are! We take along our buckets for a treasure hunt!! We collect sticks, feathers, rocks or shells and love to see what special things or animals we can find !

  60. Jennifer Robertson
    11th September 2016 / 8:12 pm

Kids do everything slowly and it can be difficult to get enough exercise so you need to be inventive and look for opportunities – such as piggy backs and silly walking.

  61. cheryl m

join in with them! i see lots of parents sitting around on their phone while the kids play…..more personal interaction and do fun things together

  62. Amanda S

We never drive if we can do the journey by walking, scooter or cycling. Just school runs alone is three hours of exercise a week.
